What is AYSO “EXTRA”

The EXTRA program in Costa Mesa is one of the premiere competitive programs in youth soccer.  The objective of the AYSO “EXTRA” program is to provide top players within each region a more competitive playing experience than traditionally offered through the recreational primary program alone.  Players participating in this program will compete against EXTRA Play teams from other regions and local area’s during the primary “Extra” season.  Team formations start at 9U-14U for boys and girls.

How Can I Participate on an AYSO “EXTRA” Team?

Selection onto an AYSO “EXTRA” team is through an evaluation process that is open to everyone registered as a player with AYSO. The assessment will evaluate players on the basis of their complete skill set, including but not limited to defending, attacking, speed, ball control, game knowledge, attitude, and effort exhibited through drills and small-sided scrimmages.  If the EXTRA program sounds like the right program for your player and family, please contact our Extra coordinator.  The EXTRA program is a full-year program which means teams formed after the Winter Assessment will play during the Spring season in order to prepare for the primary Fall EXTRA season.

The EXTRA program uses single birth years to define age brackets, with the Fall season making that determination.  For example, a 2015 birth year player will be considered U9 for the Spring 2024 season, but U10 for the Fall 2024 season.

Use the following chart for the upcoming calendar year:

FALL 2024              SPRING 2024               FALL 2024
BIRTH YEAR AGE BRACKET  AGE BRACKET
 2015 9U 10U
 2014 10U 11U
 2013 11U 12U
 2012 12U  13U
 2011 13U 14U

EXTRA is a program that offers organized soccer for players who want to play at a more competitive level, a club like experience and still be a part of AYSO.

EXTRA is for athletes whose interests and abilities lead them to a more progressive soccer experience. You can feel secure knowing your child is part of a trusted organization and will be given fair playing time. EXTRA doesn’t take away from the regular program, but adds to the strength of the organization by keeping players and their families in AYSO.

AYSO Region 120 determines the organization of EXTRA play to suit the needs and numbers of our players, but AYSO’s core philosophies are still in place: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations; and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance.

An EXTRA player may not play on any other AYSO team during the same season, nor will they be eligible for All Star play.

'Players selected to the EXTRA Program will commit to their teams as their priority non-school activity. It is expected that every player attends each practice and game at the agreed upon times.

To satisfy the commitment required by the EXTRA Program, players may not be enrolled and participate in other Club or non-AYSO soccer programs during the EXTRA Program primary season.

Each EXTRA Team must provide have two volunteer coaches and three volunteer referees and earn sufficient referee points to participate in post-season play.

How to play on an EXTRA Team: Interested players should attend tryouts held in January. Tryouts are open to core, returning EXTRA players, club players, and any interested player who would like to be considered for placement on team. The Player Review panel will review and approve player selection. Player status (selected, not selected) is sent to player family via email by Mid-February.

Final Extra Team Rosters are formed by the coach and/or the player review panel are not subject to appeal.

There is NO FEE to tryout, though all players must register for the tryout. and you do NOT yet need to have a current AYSO registration to tryout.

EXTRA Costs:
The cost to play EXTRA is $175 in Spring and $175 in Fall. Each player may be asked to contribute up to $100 to cover additional costs for upgraded uniforms, team back packs etc....

EXTRA Format of Play:
9U/10U - 7 v 7
11U/12U - 9 v 9
13U/14U - 11 v 11

What are the Costs Associated with EXTRA? Registration fees for the full year for AYSO EXTRA are approximately $350. This includes all league games in the Fall and Spring seasons, professional skills training, play-off tournament, and a free tournament in January. Typically, Club programs cost between $800 - $3,000 per year.

How are Costs so Low? Each Extra team will be responsible for volunteering a few times for the region during the year to earn money to pay for tournaments or anything else the team might need.  In addition, referees are all in house and so refs are needed for home games and tournaments.

How Many Tournaments do Extra Teams Participate In? There is no limit but most teams play between 1-2 tournaments  in Spring and 1-2 tournaments in Fall.

What is the Season Game Schedule Like for Extra? The game schedule is very similar to that of the regular Fall and Spring seasons with around 10 games per season usually on Saturdays.  The only difference is that Extra plays half of their games in other regions around the Orange County area.

If you have additional questions, please contact the Extra Play Coordinator -  Helen F
