How to Become a Referee

Step 1: Register as a volunteer in the AYSO National database through Click “Register Now” and sign up as a Volunteer. Print a copy of your completed volunteer form and be sure to submit the background check for Sterling Volunteers. Bring the copy of your completed volunteer form with you and a photo id to your next in-person training session.

Step 2: Log into using your www.ayso120 login. Click on "Online Courses" and open and complete the online Regional Referee Training before attending the in-person Regional Referee Companion Course Training.

Step 3: To be certified as a volunteer you must also open and complete at the AYSO Safe Haven Course and CDC Concussion: Head's Up class found under the "Online Courses" page.

Step 4: To become a trained Regional Referee you need to complete the 3 hour in-person "Regional Referee Online Companion Course". Follow the prompts in AYSOU for “In-person Courses" and "Referee Instructor Led Courses". Select  the "Sessions" tab for  "Regional Referee Online Companion Course".  Find the date and place of training that works best for you and select your course, then select “Register”. The instructor will send you an email reminder a few days before the class you registered to (using the email address you entered in Attend the class you signed up for. A record of your attendance will be entered into the AYSO National database and you will be issued a referee badge upon completing the class (and passing the test). You will also be issued a uniform if you are in region 120 and do not already have one.

In order to take the in person Regional Referee Online Companion Course you must bring certification of completion of the Regional Referee Training online course. You can take the online Regional Referee Course by logging into with your log-in. The course takes as little as one hour or as much as two hours to complete. You can take the course by chapters so you do not need to do all of it at once. After completing the online course you need to do one evening of in person training. You will also need to complete AYSO Safe Haven and the CDC Concussion Awareness training to be a certified volunteer.

Please bring a jacket and water

How to Create an Account and Register as a Volunteer

1.Click on “Register Now” in the top right hand corner of the site.

2. Complete the “Create New Account” section on the Login screen. Then click “Create Account.”

3. Primary Parent/Guardian Information

On this step you will enter your information and then click on

After you complete step 4, this pop up will appear.

Select option 2, if you want to skip registering a participant and only sign-up to volunteer.

5. Select Program(s) to View Volunteer Roles

Find the program, click on

6.  Complete the Volunteer Selection Page  

Look for the age group and the volunteer position you are interested in then click on 

It will now say  then click on  at the bottom of the screen.

NOTE: DO NOT SELECT MORE THAN ONE VOLUNTEER POSITION AT THIS TIME. Additional volunteer roles can be added after registration is complete.

7.   Select the name of the volunteer and click “Continue.”

8.   Additional Position Information 

Fill in all the fields with a red asterisk.

Make sure to accept the waiver at the bottom of the page  then click on 

9.  Volunteer E-Signature 

Select the  button, then 

10.  Review Application and E-Sign

a)  Click on the box next to the words “I agree to use an electronic signature.”
b)  Click on the radio button next to the words “I am an adult of the age of majority in my state…”
c)  Type your name in the yellow box for “Volunteer Signature.”
d)  Click on “Continue to Review.”

On the last screen, if all the information on the volunteer form is correct, then click on  at the bottom of the application.

12.  Complete Sterling Volunteer Application

 NOW new for 2019:  AYSO has increased the level of their background checks, which now has to be finished by a 3rd Party System:
Sterling Volunteers (aka: Verified Volunteers).  Same company as before, but now you will receive an email from them to set up an
outside account with them and complete your background check process.  It is an extra step, but it is quick and should be about
5 to 7 minutes.  If you DO NOT see their email in your inbox, please check your spam/junk folder.  ALSO, when signing up with Sterling,
please use the same email address you did with Blue Sombrero (also, the same email Sterling sent the email too.)

AYSO's Safe Haven was developed to protect both children and volunteers. The program covers protection guidelines, safety and injury prevention as well as the important of role modeling sporting behavior and supporting the philosophies of AYSO.

CDC: Concussion Course

By taking this free, online course and using what you learn, you will be well positioned to improve the culture of concussion. Your actions can help create a safe environment for young athletes so that they can stay healthy, active, and thrive - both on and off the playing field.

Upon completion of this training, you can print out a certificate, making it easy to show your league or school you are ready for the season.

How-to sign-up for the online CDC: Concussion Course

1)Approximate time to complete is about 60 minutes

3)Select "Online Courses"
4)Click the "Open" button next to "CDC: Concussion Course".
